I never eat chocolate biscuits but I just ate 4 of your choc-dilights and I am trying not to eat any more! I had to give the other 4 biscuits away. I was scared I would become addicted! Will have to try the coconut ones next. It is great you are doing other products as well as bread now.

All the best,
Marion

Mission Statement for Paraoa Bakehouse

To create, promote, and supply safe organic bread and produce to an ever increasing market, through a sustainable, reproducible business model.

How did it Purebread come about?

From a background of organic agriculture and home bread baking, Robert Glensor conceived the idea of combining these interests to commercially produce simply lovely, organic bread.

After nine months of grass root research and development, Paraoa Bakehouse was born April 1996. With the able assistance of son Kain, expertise of Roy Ramsay and his plant in the old ‘Hot Bread Shop’, S.H. 1 Paraparaumu, and big learning curves, we hand produced those early Purebread 1kg loaves packed in a brown paper bag.

Purebread was New Zealand's first Bio-Gro certified organic bread, earning product and bakehouse certification in August of 1996. Bio Gro is New Zealand’s premier organic certifying authority, affiliated to IFOAM who are the internationally recognised body.  Visit Bio Gro Website

Purebread and Paraoa Bakehouse earned Bio Gro's certificate through the use of a minimum of 95% organic ingredients and a natural baking process. The grains and honey grown for Purebread are from certified organic farms, regularly audited over a minimum period of five years to ensure they maintain rigorous standards. No artificial herbicides or pesticides, sustainable management practices and minimal use of non renewable energy.

The vision was to create a totally unique New Zealand product, manifested in the flavour, the name, the kiwi ingenuity, and the packaging design. "Paraoa", the Maori word for bread, was the name given to the earlier loaves out of Ahipara by family friend and elder Leo (Leopold) Yates. On the pack, my bush favourite, the Mamaku Punga (Black Fern) needed to feature with its utter grace along with the koru’s significance of new life.

Purebread Takes Off

Our father and son operation soon expanded to four, and rapidly out grew our leased facilities.

The search began in earnest for new premises and facilities, and relatively quickly various antiquated mixers, bakery equipment and a huge gas fired oven were sourced from all around the country.

The present building was chosen for its lined walls and ceilings (required by Health regulations) and because it allowed for further growth.

The building was fitted out mostly in-house - by myself, our versatile staff and the friendly electrician, brother John.

Now producing several varieties and Pizza Bases, the new, ‘home of Purebread’ turned out its first loaves on December 9th 1997.
What a night! That date has special significance to my family and I am truly blessed to be part of a wonderful and and extremely talented family.

I have managed to involve most of them in the Purebread jugornaught and much of the great growth we have enjoyed must be attributed to their individual skills and great support.

My talented family of Purebread developers

Luke
- who designed the original hand drawn Purebread logo and earlier bags
Jo - who is the best demonstrator I have known
John - straight to business sparky who can make things work when others can’t
Peter - the best wordsmith around and Pak n Save marketer
Scott - equipment repair, engineering design and construction
Matthew D and Sarah - who constructed a unique Purebread database
Matt - our new ideas, graphic designer.
Kena - Sustainable business consultant

Others have put their money on the line, but all have given unquestionable support. I thank them all.

The company - Paraoa Bakehouse Limited - was formed in March 1998.

As the production and labour force grew, we needed to expand again. Fortunately, the opportunity arose to lease the other half of our building. The dividing wall came down, doubling the original floor area.

A total re-fit, including linoleum floors and large dry goods storage, was completed in December 1999. Paraoa Bakehouse is totally focused on continuous improvement of our business systems and production methods. We are proud to be socially responsible employers, supporting sustainable growing and production methods, and earning ‘world expert’ status in the field of organic bread making (see location map).

The specialists for creating hearty food the whole family loves to share!
