NEWS RELEASE - 13 August 2008
Who is the lower North Island's most sustainable business?
The hunt for the lower North Island's most sustainable business took a step closer tonight as this year's regional finalists were announced during a Green Drinks event held at Southern Cross Garden Bar and Restaurant in Wellington.
Entries for the Sustainable Business Network Central Region Awards, which closed on 21 July, were received from businesses of all sizes operating in diverse industries across the region, which covers the area from Wellington to Hawkes Bay.
Kirsten Gendall, Regional Manager of the Sustainable Business Network's Central office, is delighted with the number of both new and existing members entering. "We're excited to see the number of award entries increase by almost 100 percent this year. The calibre of entrants is extremely high, and it's heartening to see the dedication to environmentally and socially responsible activities within these businesses." To enter the awards, businesses participated in the Sustainable Business Network's 'Get Sustainable Challenge', covering eight identified areas of sustainable practice; or entered the Sustainable Design and Innovation Award, which covers products, services and buildings.

Greater Wellington Regional Council is the principal sponsor of the Region's Get Sustainable Challenge and Environmental Education manger, Geoff Skene says he and his team are impressed by the finalists' commitment to becoming more sustainable.
"We're pleased to support the Get Sustainable Challenge. It is a valuable tool that encourages business to take stock of their impacts, and it actively contributes towards the council's long-term goal of developing a sustainable region."
The awards will be announced at a cocktail event at 6pm on Thursday, 11 September at the Lambton Rooms, InterContinental Hotel, corner Grey and Featherston Streets, Wellington.
Winners of the regional awards automatically progress to the nationwide NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards to be announced in Auckland on 9 October.
