News Paraoa Bakehouse scoops region’s sustainability award

Kapiti Coast’s Paraoa Bakehouse is tonight celebrating after being awarded the top honour in the Sustainable Business Network’s Central Regional Awards.

Producers of organically certified bread products, Paraoa Bakehouse not only took out the Trailblazer SME Business Award, but also scored the top prize, which saw them named the region’s Sustainable Business of the Year.

Known as the home of Purebread, Paraoa Bakehouse produces 5000 loaves of wheat-based bread and other gluten-free and wheat-free products, which are sold throughout New Zealand.

The judges were impressed with the company’s commitment to waste minimisation, which has seen weekly waste reduced to the size of a netball.

Resene Paints and previous winners YHA Wellington City were also contenders for the overall prize.

The 2008 Central Sustainable Business Network Award category winners are:

The awards are sponsored by Greater Wellington Regional Council, Hutt City Council, Kapiti Coast District Council, and Wellington City Council.

Greater Wellington is principal sponsor of the Get Sustainable Challenge in the Central Region.

The Sustainable Business Network Awards recognise those businesses that are demonstrating leadership by embracing sustainable practices into their day-to-day operations.

Kirsten Gendall, Regional Manager of the Sustainable Business Network’s Central office, is delighted with the achievements of these businesses that are demonstrating their commitment to more sustainable practices.

“The dedication to environmentally and socially responsible activities is obvious within these businesses. They clearly act as role models for others in the region.

“The calibre of entrants was extremely high, and the judging panel certainly had their work cut out for them. Congratulations to Pararoa Bakehouse and all our winners.”

To enter the awards, businesses participated in the Sustainable Business Network’s ‘Get Sustainable Challenge’, covering eight identified areas of sustainable practice; or entered the Sustainable Design and Innovation Award, which covers products, services, and buildings.

The regional award winners will represent the region in the NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards, which are being held in Auckland on Thursday, 9 October. Last year, three of the five top awards were won by Central region finalists, including Contact Energy, Starfish, and YHA Wellington City.
